LACEY TOWNSHIP - She's not your typical sports consultant. And some might say she's just in it for the graham crackers. But there's no denying that Princess the camel has a knack for picking the winning football team.
For the past three weeks straight the humped resident of the Popcorn Park Zoo has correctly predicted the victor. Week one it was the Giants over the Eagles. Week two: Jets over Buffalo. Week three Princess chose the Eagles over the Packers. Those who put money on the Eagles are still smiling.
'She's got an uncanny ability,' said Dan Alexander, the webmaster at 105.7 The Hawk, who coordinates the station's football pool for listeners.
Alexander said that when the pool started up, the idea of having an animal pick teams arose. The Hawk's sister station was already dealing with the Lacey zoo - a weekly segment to adopt a dog each week - so Alexander approached the manager there, John Bergmann, to see if he had an animal around that only picked winners.
'When they asked that I immediately thought of Princess,' Bergmann said.
Every week after, either Dr. Phil or other station personalities such as Race Thomas or Alex The Foxx that Rocks come to the zoo and offered Princess a graham cracker in each hand. On the person's palms are written the names of the teams playing that weekend. It is up to Princess to decide which cracker to eat.
'She's doing better than me in the pool,' Dr. Phil admitted.
So well, in fact, that Alexander said many of the 400 listeners participating in the pool now wait to see what the camel picks before laying down their moneyless bet.
'It's so ridiculous and stupid that it's compelling,' Dr. Phil explained.
He said the pool will run through the Super Bowl. Princess made her pick on Wednesday for Sunday's Giants vs. Redskins.
