FALL SPORTS SCHEDULE PICKS UP SPEED THIS WEEKEND - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

RICHARDSON, Texas, Sept. 7 -- The University of Texas at Dallas issued the following news release:

The fall Comets sports season hits its stride this weekend with the women's soccer team playing twice here and the volleyball squad and men's soccer team facing full schedules in tournaments out of town.

All three teams have been picked to finish the season at or near the top of their divisions in polls of American Southwest Conference East Division head coaches and sports information directors.

The volleyball team was picked to win its seventh straight division title.

Freshman outside hitter Abbie Barth was chosen as the division's offensive player of the week after leading the Comets to a 3-1 finish in the UT Dallas Labor Day Tournament. The team travels this weekend to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a tournament hosted by Colorado College.

The men's and women's soccer teams were both predicted to place No. 2 in their divisions in the preseason poll.

The women's team plays Southwestern University on Friday and Trinity University on Sunday. Junior goalkeeper Brittany Best was named the American Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league office late Tuesday.

The men's soccer team, also projected to place second in the division, plays -----Trinity and Southwestern, on Saturday and Sunday respectively, in San Antonio this weekend.

Tennis, golf and cross-country play also starts this month. Basketball picks up in November.
