BEVERLEY MP Graham Stuart has welcomed the delay in a crucial decision on plans to axe community hospital beds - and called on health chiefs to drop the proposals.

As reported in last week's Beverley Guardian, the East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) has delayed a decision on its hugely controversial plans until May 23, after receiving more than 3,000 responses during the public consultation.

Mr Stuart says it is clear that the proposals are unacceptable and has called on the PCT to work with the campaigners on an alternative way forward.

The MP claims that the delay in making a decision, which was originally due to be considered this week, is good news for patients and residents of the East Riding.

'The Primary Care Trust's plans were ill thought out and unacceptable to local patients, doctors and residents. The extent of public concern is shown by the sheer quantity of responses sent by the public,' he said.

'Hospital campaigners are not against change and are happy to work with the PCT on an alternative set of proposals. What we are clear about, however, is that the current proposals are all unacceptable and must be dropped.'

The PCT has carried out a 14-week consultation over the future of local community health services. Its proposals would mean none of the East Riding's community hospitals would keep any beds, with NHS beds being provided in the private sector.

It offers options for specialist hospital services at either Bridlington or Goole, Bridlington and Goole or Bridlington and Goole and an unspecified site elsewhere.
